Virtual Heritage & Conservation Tour

Tour Description:

Bring one of Canada’s most historic wildlife sanctuaries directly into your classroom through a live, interactive virtual tour. Guided by a Sanctuary educator, students will explore the history, heritage, and conservation legacy of The Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary while discovering how Jack Miner’s pioneering work helped shape modern wildlife conservation in North America.

Students will virtually visit the Jack Miner Historic House, Jack Miner Museum, Public Viewing Pond, Jack Miner’s gravesite, the historic swim-in capture net, and the Sanctuary’s bird banding workshop, where they will learn about the history and science of bird banding through live presentations, historical artifacts, photographs, and multimedia.

When migration activity and weather permit, students may also observe a live bird banding demonstration, providing a unique behind-the-scenes look at how birds are safely captured, measured, banded, and released for scientific research. Throughout the program, students are encouraged to ask questions and interact with Sanctuary staff, creating an engaging learning experience that connects history, science, and conservation.

Learning Goals:

Water is life. It is the most important component of any ecosystem, as all living organisms require water to grow and survive. Nevertheless, various human activities are major contributors to the growing problem of water scarcity. In this workshop, students will explore the interconnectedness of habitat and wildlife through the lens of water. They will assess their water use and learn about the social, economic, and environmental impacts of water scarcity. Hands-on, sensory activities (e.g., construction and observation of water filtration systems, use of tools for water assessment, etc.) will help demonstrate water systems and contextualize water quality. A broad range of grassroots and systemic water scarcity solutions will be explored.

Students will:

  • Explore the life and conservation legacy of Jack Miner.
  • Discover the history of the Jack Miner Migratory Bird Sanctuary and its role in migratory bird conservation.
  • Investigate the history and purpose of bird banding as a scientific research tool.
  • Examine how bird banding helps scientists study migration, monitor bird populations, and support wildlife conservation.
  • Explore the Sanctuary’s historic sites and bird banding facilities through a live virtual tour.
  • Recognize the importance of habitat conservation and environmental stewardship in protecting migratory birds and biodiversity.
