Jack was such a respected and beloved individual that he and his wife were granted permission to be laid to rest on this piece of paradise that they called home so that he would always be near his beloved geese and ducks. This was an honour never bestowed upon any other individual.
Jack passed away in 1944 and his wife, Laona, in 1951. To honour his memory and activism, the Government of Canada passed legislation on Apr. 18, 1947, which declared the week of Miner’s birthday, “National Wildlife Week”. To this day the Sanctuary uses this week to open back up for visitors, and celebrate the man who created this beautiful place.
